The
aula is the public space of the residence. In the 12th century, it
is the king-duke’s reception hall and great hall, where he sits during
the assemblies, passes judgments, receives petitioners and visitors, resolves
disputes… It is also a festive place where one can imagine banquets
and celebrations. This first room possesses the
only entry to the keep.
The large ornate
Norman Romanesque windows let lots of light in; at this height, there
is no risk of intrusion. One can imagine the
decoration and the layout : carpets on the floor, painted motifs and
hangings on the walls, windows protected by heavy interior wooden shutters.
